Coming to terms with the end of summer is never easy. And while the cooling of the seasons makes us reminisce on the scorching hot summer days–where we spent most of our time hunting for air conditioning and a space to lay our towels down on crowded beaches–it’s a time where we welcome fall and winter with open arms and a lot of warm layers.

This Fall/Winter 2022/2023 Season, we can anticipate to see a variety of themes that welcome such courageous creativity and imaginative expressions that align with the fashion industry's most important trend of the season: sustainability. From 90s Minimalist and Effortless Equestrian to Punk Rock and Roll and Lingerie Chic, the upcoming seasons are sure to offer ethical and stylish fashions for all.

Colors

For more than 20 years, Pantone’s annual color(s) selection has helped shape the color palettes for the spring/summer and fall/winter seasons. The selection influences product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries including fashion, home furnishings, and industrial design, as well as product packaging and graphic design. This year’s Pantone Color of the Year is Very Peri (PANTONE 17-3938). The meaning behind the 2022 color selection extends far beyond its soft and nurturing nature. According to Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute Leatrice Eiseman, “moving into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri displays a spiritley, joyous attitude and and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions” (Pantone, 2022). And though summer is coming to end, there still remains a high demand for bright and bold colors, like Very Peri, during the Fall/Winter 2022/2023 Season. From colors like Lava Falls and Rose Violet to Martini Olive and Waterspout, expect to see a variety of daring colors, in addition to core classics like Polar Night and Autumn Blonde this season.

Patterns

The Fall/Winter 2022/2023 Season pays homage to classic patterns like houndstooth, plaid and argyle. And though these prints are timeless, designers are incorporating new motifs–pulling inspiration from the 1980s and folklore in Nordic countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland).

Fabrics/Folds

Though these cooler seasons anticipate the return of durability and warmth–with staple pieces like the Burberry Trench Coat (made from gabardine) and Ralph Lauren sweater vest (woven/knit from cotton)– expect to see translucent fabric and lace detailing dominate the Fall/Winter 2022/2023 Season.

Footwear

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the needs of consumers have shifted strictly from style alone to one of style, comfort–and most importantly–sustainability. The time in lockdown gave designers the opportunity to re-assess the needs of consumers, and what consumers wanted was to dress up and go out in styles that were doing the most for the environment. With luxury labels like Dolce & Gabbana committed to removing fur from its collections and banning animal fur from all collections in the future, we're seeing a shift in the values and production of the world's top fashion brands. And like Dolce & Gabbana, luxury brand Off-White introduced its Fall/Winter 2022/2023 ready-to-wear collection on the basis of sustainability with styles like the brand's faux fur shearling heel. Beyond sustainability and shearling footwear, expect to see trends like ballet flats, loafers, over the knee boots and westernized boots fill your closet.

Pants, Denim and Skirts

I may be one of the few who welcome the return of low-rise, loose-fitting pants but what better way to maximize your comfort–and style–than with oversized fashions. The fashion industry works on a pendulum swing, meaning it moves between extremes. For example, fluctuations between long and short hemlines, fitted and oversized silhouettes, and dressed up and casual looks. These swings can take decades or a fashion season. And though we'll be seeing trends like the denim and/or cargo micro mini skirt, the skirt belt and pleated "school girl" skirt this season, the industry is swinging towards more oversized, loose-fitting styles with fashions like wide-leg trousers and cargo pants.

Coats and Jackets

Keeping warm and looking fashionable is a top priority when making the transition from summer and spring to fall and winter. Classics like the Burberry Trench Coat, oversized blazer and fur coat remain a staple piece this season. And while the fur coat has always been a dominant trend during these cooler months, companies like Fendi and Jacquemus are taking a sustainable approach to this timeless piece and ditching real fur for faux fur. Beyond the classics, expect to see trends like the cape coat and jockey/riding blazer this fall and winter season.

Tops

This fall and winter season, designers are prioritizing capsule collection pieces with their own spin on classics like the white tank, prep-style sweaters, cropped knitwear and fitting corsets. But beyond these staple pieces, we'll be seeing leather harnesses and sheer, embellished button-downs paving the way for fall and winter fashion.

Dresses and Rompers

Whether dressing up or down, the Fall/Winter 2022/2023 ready-to-wear collections include a variety of silhouettes for you to choose from. From Duncan's long sleeve, ruffled turtleneck to Stella McCartney's cut-out detailing and Rodarte's voluminous sleeves, your closet is sure to be full of options. Additionally, expect to see lingerie-esque slips, catsuits, empire-silhouettes and corseted ball gowns this season.

Athleisure

Elevated athleisure is the theme of the season and with brands like Gucci and Khaite collaborating with sportswear company Adidas, it's only the beginning. The Fall/Winter 2022/2023 ready-to-wear collections include a variety of athletic dresses, corset tops, sport coats and tracksuits. No longer is activewear bound by athletic activity, but by daily tasks that demand both style and comfort.

Accessories

Though designers are adding their own spin on classic fall and winter fashions, accessories are what are defining this season's ready-to-wear collections. From Proenza Schouler's balaclavas and Miu Miu's preppy neckties to Diesel's layered belts and Gucci's embellished baseball caps, accessories are playing a key role in elevating and personalizing fashion. Additionally, wool stockings, dramatic pearls, faux fur headwear and maxi-clutch bags will be prominent this fall and winter.
